On a summer afternoon several years ago, John Hess went out with some diving companions off the coast of San Benedicto Island to spearfish for tuna. During his 90-foot dive, John experienced an extraordinary event. Every single fish in his vicinity scattered in the blink of an eye. While John carefully swam along, he was overcome with a sense of wonder as he watched an entire school of hammerhead sharks pass him. After meeting his future wife, Marla, on a dive excursion, John sold his charter boat business and set his sights on beginning a family and another successful career.
